Juan María Nin Génova (born 1953, Barcelona, Spain) is a Spanish lawyer and economist. He served as a lieutenant in the Spanish Marine Infantry. Throughout his career, he has held senior positions in both the Spanish public administration and the private sector, with a focus on finance and energy. He has also worked with the University of Deusto, ⁣⁣ESADE, and the Deusto Business School in various directorial roles. Since 2024, he has been the president of the Círculo de Empresarios.[1]

Early life and education

Nin was born in 1953 in Barcelona.

He earned a degree in Law and Economics from the University of Deusto and a master's degree in Law and Politics from the London School of Economics.

Career path

Juan María Nin's professional career has focused on the banking sector. He was formerly involved in bank and savings bank mergers in Spain and held management positions in Spanish listed companies.[2] He was formerly an executive vice-president and CEO of La Caixa,[3] CEO of Banco Sabadell, managing director of Banco Santander and a member of the board of directors of Société Générale de Banque, its Risk Committee, Remuneration Committee and US Risk Committee.[4] He has also been involved in the energy sector and served on the boards of Cepsa, Repsol and Naturgy among other companies.[5]

In 2024, Nin became chairman of ITP Aero, Itínere Infraestructuras, Mora Banc, Tressis, and the European Advisory Board of Metyis. He also serves as an operating partner of Corsair Capital.[6]

His international career began between 1978 and 1980. He was part of the team of the Minister for Relations with the European Communities that negotiated Spain's accession to the European Communities. Since then, he has been a strong supporter of the European project.[7] A former president of the Spain-US Council Foundation, he is considered an expert on bilateral relations between the two countries.[8] He is also a regular contributor to the Bilderberg, the IMF, Greenmantle and other international forums, as well as the author of books and analytical articles on economics and social science. Among his notable works is the book "Por un crecimiento racional", which focuses on the 2008 financial crisis. This publication was positively reviewed for its analysis of the economic challenges faced during that period.[9]

He has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit award (2013) and the Grand Cross of Police Merit.

Personal life

He is married to Alicia Garaizabal, and they have four children together.

Published books

In 2017, Nin's book "Por un crecimiento racional" (Ed. Deusto) was published by Deusto. The book reflected on the economy and finance and proposed a series of political and economic reforms for the future.[10]
